Popularity of Poker Opens New Doors for Business Networking and Social Responsibility
McLean Company Finds Unique Way to Raise Money for Needed Causes

Today Metaformers announced the launch of a three-pronged program to combine a) business networking, b) national pastime events like poker and horse racing, and c) charitable giving.
“I believe it’s important to inspire and give employees opportunities to give,” said Ed Bouryng, president of Metaformers, Inc. “By linking networking events and charity fundraisers we’ve tapped into a surprising new way to encourage social responsibility. Our combined networking / charity events allow executives to meet and build valuable business relationships while at the same time supporting the important work of charities. It’s a win for participants and a win for charities and we look forward to building on the success of these programs.”
In a recent Washington Post article former president Clinton warned: “the economic downturn could undermine major charitable investments around the world just when help is particularly needed.”
To encourage continued giving, Metaformers developed an innovative concept for corporate charitable events – combining business networking with popular pastime events like poker and horse racing, and the opportunity to give back to charities.
In September Metaformers hosted the Red Carpet Charity Poker Showdown at the Oracle OpenWorld conference, a conference that draws more than 40,000 attendees from around the world. Fifty people attended and played in the Poker Showdown three-hour event. During the first hour, attendees enjoyed a champagne reception and an introductory poker lesson led by tournament director Robert W. Thompson II from Bravo Channel’s Celebrity Poker Showdown. During the second hour participants joined in a “Shoot-out” format that took the top two winners from each table. During the third hour the final table played an elimination style game to determine the winner. Donations in the names of the top three winners were made to the following organizations: First prize San Francisco AIDS Foundation; Second prize American Heart Association; Third prize St. Joseph’s Helpers crisis pregnancy center in Little Rock, AK.
In October, Metaformers hosted Pick Winners and Make Your Charity a Winner in conjunction with a Best Practices in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) CIO conference. The conference was held at Keeneland in Lexington, KY and brought CIOs from Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee. More than forty people attended the Pick Winners event. Each participant was given a race card and the opportunity to pick the winners for seven horse races. Donations in the names of the top three winners were made to the following organizations: First prize American Printing House for the Blind; Second prize Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption; Third prize Hope Center.
Metaformers plans to develop additional events in 2009.
